Name: Bob
School: Cadell Prison utilising Open Access College
I had help from some special people. Their names are: Marilyn Smyth, Ursula Brieger and many of the staff at Open Access College as well as staff within the prison system.
The hardest time for me was when: I actually made my decision to return to education, it seemed to be an insurmountable volume of work and would take numerous years to complete.
The best time for me was: Young Nunga’s enrolled in educational courses with the aim of bettering themselves.
I am enrolled at: the University of South Australia
I am studying: Visual Arts and Crafts
I know that I am a role model for other Aboriginal students in my family and in my community and I am encouraging other students by: Setting an example and encouraging Nunga’s to utilise education pathways no matter what their circumstances.
Any other comments you would like to make: I am 47 years old and have wasted much of my life languishing within the prison system, and while it is hard to do education within the prison system I feel it is never too late. There is a great sense of accomplishment upon completion and employment opportunity is greatly enhanced. Doors will defiantly open for those willing to learn. Maybe I will meet some of you in my future position of an Art and Craft Teacher.
